Enigma Solicitors’ Neil Mercer makes 39th platelet donation

Neil Mercer, one of the partners of Enigma Solicitors, gave his 39th platelet donation today.

The National Blood Service say: “Most platelet donations are given to patients who are unable to make enough platelets in their bone marrow. For example, patients with leukaemia or other cancers may have too few platelets as the result of their disease or treatment.

“Also after some major surgery or extensive injury, patients may need platelet transfusions to replace those lost through bleeding. Platelets given by our generous and committed donors are often life-saving and special in that they can help up to 3 adults or even 12 children! What’s more, as platelets can only be stored for a few days, regular and frequent donors are in great demand and that is why we are asking our platelet donors to attend at least 8 times per year.”

Most people can give blood. If you are generally in good health, age 17 to 65 (if it’s your first time) and weigh at least 7st 12Ib you can donate. You can give blood every 16 weeks, that’s approximately every four months.

For more information on donating platelets or blood, please visit the National Blood Service’s website.

Photographs taken by Neil while donating platelets can be viewed below:

Enigma’s Neil Mercer sketched by Britain’s foremost trial artist

The North Devon Journal recently interviewed Elizabeth Cook, Britain’s foremost trial artist. To preserve privacy and prevent distractions at court proceedings, cameras are barred from courtrooms, with news media relying on sketch artists to provide a visual in-court record of the trial.

Elizabeth refers to her work as “visual journalism, capturing a moment in time for history” and has caught the events of many high-profile trials and hearings, sketching, amongst many others, Harold Shipman, Jon Venables, Rosemary West, Vanessa George, General Pinochet, Jeffrey Archer, Elton John, the Spice Girls, Piers Morgan, Tony Blair and Naomi Campbell.

Enigma’s Neil Mercer was sketched by the Devon-born illustrator in 2005, when Elizabeth was covering an RSPCA prosecution for ITV:

Profile of Enigma’s Rory Smith

Rory Smith

Enigma‘s Rory Smith studied law at Oxford University and returned to Plymouth to train as a solicitor. He was previously the Managing Partner of another local firm.

Rory has successfully conducted a large number of negligence claims against other solicitors. Rory Smith feels this work has in many cases helped to restore his Clients’ confidence in the legal profession and has also helped him to understand what it takes to be a good solicitor and to avoid costly mistakes and client dissatisfaction.

He also deals with employment law cases and a mix of commercial litigation and civil litigation.

When asked how he aimed to build a successful Solicitor/Client relationship, he replied, “I believe it is vital to form a clear view of your case at the outset and the direction that it should take and then communicating that view clearly to you. I explain everything to my Clients in plain English every step of the way. I answer your questions about your case before you ask them. I understand my responsibility to be clear with you constantly about costs, risks and prospects. I treat no case as routine. I like cases which require long-term determination and which are challenging.”

Rory added, “I enjoy achieving results for Clients who have been let down as illustrated by this recommendation that I received from a Client at the end of his case: ‘Several years ago a firm of solicitors let me down. Because of this, I thought that they should owe me compensation. I went to two firms of solicitors to see if they would help me to sue the first solicitors. The case was complex and I thought that somebody would really need to get their teeth into it. Neither of the solicitors that I saw were able to help me. They did not seem to grasp the case and gave me no confidence. I then met Rory Smith. Straight away he seemed to have a much better understanding of what the case was about and where he was going with it. He acted for me from the outset on a no win no fee basis. Although my opponents fought it for a while, I never doubted that we would be successful. In the end I received a large settlement from my opponents and I also recovered all of my legal costs from them. Rory restored my faith in solicitors.’”

Rory’s e-mail address is rls@enigmalaw.com.
